threat of identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission has dedicated an
entire website
to this problem.
The
FBI
leads
4 identity theft task forces. The
Secret Service has
27 Financial Crimes Task Forces and 24 Electronic Crimes
Task Forces that focus on identity theft-related crimes. With this kind of
attention being given to the crime of identity theft, do you really think this
can't happen to you? If you are a business owner, are you aware of your exposure if you are not compliant with recent legislature? You are not obligated to be in compliance, just as you are not obligated to keep current with tax changes, but the consequences for either is very expensive. The legislatures to be concerned about are HIPPA, FACTA and Gramm Leach Bliley. The penalties for non-compliance vary from one legislature to another, but will range from civil penalties on your business up to $100,000 for each violation, the officers and directors can be help personally liable for up to $10,000 per violation, you can lose your professional license, and/or be subject to class action lawsuits.
