According to the Federal Trade Commission, Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime and the number one criminal concern for law enforcement over the next decade (see MSNBC).  Thieves are so bold that they held a conference in Kiev, Ukraine, for people interested in breaking into this Growth Industry.

Did you know there are five kinds of Identity Theft?
  • Drivers License Identity Theft - Thieves use your information to acquire a driver's license in your name or claim to be you during a traffic stop.   You could receive DWI, DUI and other driving-related charges resulting in your license being suspended or even in your being arrested during a routine traffic stop for crimes you didn't commit

  • Social Security Identity Theft - Thieves use your SSN to gain employment or to report income under your name.  This is becoming an epidemic with illegal aliens.

  • Medical Identity Theft - Thieves use your information for insurance benefits, prescriptions, Medicare, Medicaid benefits or for medical tests.  Your rates could go up or your coverage cancelled and you could owe thousands of dollars for a procedure you never had.  Further, you could be denied medical or life insurance coverage and/or employment because of conditions that you do not have.

  • Character/Criminal Identity Theft - Thieves will mask their criminal activity behind your identity.  You could be arrested, denied employment because of fraudulent criminal records found during a background check, and security checkpoints at an airport could become a nightmare for you.  Losing your wallet could land you in jail.

  • Financial Identity Theft - Thieves use your information to open new accounts or gain access to existing accounts.  They can rack up outrageous charges on credit cards, take out new loans, destroying your credit and, in addition, you could be held responsible for debts incurred by thieves in your name.

In 2001, there were 1 million reported breaches.  In 2006, there have been over 15 million.  Statistics show that 1 in 4 people will be a victim.  You probably know someone who has been a victim.    http://www.privacyrights.org/ar/ChronDataBreaches.htm  Identity theft is not going away and its going to get worse.  From massive data-brokerage firms to tiny local banks, your identity is "out there".  Your information is databased in medical records, banks, insurance companies, the DMV, real estate records, phone number listings, car registration, the local grocery store, and anywhere you have one of those little aggregator cards that help you save money with every purchase.   You don't even need to own a computer!  The list of companies that have lost, been hacked or had information stolen may look familiar:  ChoicePoint, CitiFinancial, MasterCard, AOL, the IRS, VA Administration, Bank of America, Acxiom...

The average dollar amount charged in Identity Theft is $92,893.  Laws hold victims partially responsible for fraudulent debt after 48 hours, and hold them FULLY responsible if not reported within 60 days.  You may not even know your identity has been stolen for months!  Once it happens, it takes an average of 600 hours  and thousands of dollars in lost wages and legal fees to restore your identity.

If you are interested in protecting yourself, please give me a call or visit IDT Theft.  ID Theft Insurance typically provided by insurance companies will help, but you may have to pay out of pocket first (up to $25,000 in some instances), then file a claim, and then hope for an underwriters approval for reimbursement.  This can take weeks or months.  In addition, they may not pay for the fraudulent losses, and chances are you will carry the full burden of clearing your name.   If you already have Identity Theft insurance, by all means read the fine print.  If you don't have it, contact me so that I may educate you on how you can help fight back.
